What is Virtualisation
|
 |
 |
 |
Virtualisation is the abstraction
of physical hardware from the operating systems
of servers and desktops. This is achieved by use
of a hypervisor. A hypervisor allows multiple operating
systems to access and share the resource of a single
physical host. Each operating system appears to
have the processor, memory, network and disk all
to itself however it is actually sharing it. The
virtual machines are allocated resource when needed
in turn or based upon a set of access rules, whilst
maintaining complete isolation.
This technology enables multiple virtual machines
to access the same hardware therefore reducing,
power, space and costs associated with today's infrastructure.
There are different version of hypervisor's that
are available today, each varying in features, functionality
and cost. VMI Consultancy can offer professional
services around each of these solutions enabling
the right technology to be adopted for any given
business.
Virtualisation can provide the following benefits
and features.
- Reduce Carbon footprint through reducing
power consumption, heat dissipation and physical
space of servers through Virtualisation
- Provision new servers in minutes rather than
days without the need for new hardware through
- Provide Test and development environments
quickly and easily
- Minimise downtime of servers
- Replicate production environments for specific
projects such as application upgrades or even
migrations
- Significantly improve utilisation of your
servers
- Increase redundancy and availability of servers
and applications
- Reduce management and administrative overheads
of your servers and applications
- Replicate entire production environments
easily and quickly to provide disaster recovery.
